Large-Volume Potato Storage Facility with Centralized Microclimate Control

Objective

  • Maximize usable storage volume within the facility

  • Reduce overall power consumption through optimized airflow and climate-control design

  • Implement an emergency valve-closing system to ensure product safety during power outages

  • Build a 5-meter-high bulk potato bunker capable of long-term storage

  • Deploy a centralized microclimate-control system for two buildings, each containing four storage sections (total: eight sections)

  • Ensure long-term product preservation and maintain potato quality until June

Solution

The project combined several advanced engineering solutions tailored for high-volume potato storage:

  • A perforated air-circuit system was implemented to ensure uniform airflow and stable microclimate conditions within the 5-meter-high bunker.

  • Custom-designed exhaust valves were used to increase usable storage area and reduce airflow speed, significantly lowering energy consumption.

  • A high-pressure humidification system was installed to prevent excessive dehydration and maintain potato quality throughout long-term storage.

  • Due to unstable electricity availability on site, the facility was equipped with uninterruptible power-supply systems. In the event of a blackout, the intake–exhaust valves close automatically, protecting the stored crop from sudden temperature or humidity fluctuations.

  • A centralized microclimate-control platform was deployed, allowing the operator to manage all eight storage sections using a single control device with remote access.

  • The project incorporated a mechanical refrigeration system and dedicated air coolers specially engineered for high-volume vegetable storage.

This configuration ensures stable storage quality in challenging hot or humid climates found across India, Africa, the Middle East, and the UAE.

Distinguishing Features & Project Workflow

  1. Engineering and project development

  2. Procurement of equipment and materials

  3. Delivery and logistics

  4. Installation and system integration

  5. Start-up, calibration, and optimization

Agrovent’s engineering team, construction department, and specialists in ventilation and microclimate systems executed the full scope of work.

All equipment was manufactured and delivered within six weeks - an exceptionally fast timeline for a project of this scale.

The high-pressure humidification system significantly reduced product drying, helping maintain marketability and visual quality throughout the storage season.
