Microclimate of rabbit farms

The microclimate on a rabbit farm plays a crucial role in the productivity, health, and overall well-being of the rabbits. Rabbits are particularly sensitive to environmental conditions, making the microclimate a critical factor in their performance.

An integrated approach to the organization of the microclimate, including automated control systems and timely parameter adjustments, ensures stable farm operation and high profitability of production.

Optimal Growth & Development: Rabbits thrive within a specific temperature range. Maintaining the correct temperature prevents heat stress and cold stress, which can significantly impact growth rates. A well-controlled microclimate ensures efficient feed conversion, proper fur development, and overall health, leading to faster growth and earlier market readiness.

Reproductive Success: The microclimate is essential for successful breeding. Extreme temperatures can reduce reproductive performance, leading to decreased litter sizes, lower conception rates, and increased abortions. Maintaining a stable and comfortable environment, particularly during breeding and gestation, is crucial for maximizing reproductive success and consistent production.

Disease Prevention & Control: Poor ventilation and high humidity create ideal conditions for the spread of respiratory diseases (e.g., pneumonia), coccidiosis, and other common rabbit ailments. Proper ventilation removes excess moisture, ammonia, and other harmful gases, minimizing the risk of disease outbreaks and reducing mortality rates. Clean air is crucial for preventing respiratory issues.

Fur Quality: The microclimate directly affects fur quality, which is important for meat and fur production. Optimal conditions promote the growth of healthy, dense fur, enhancing the market value of the rabbits. Maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity levels is crucial for achieving the desired fur characteristics.

Reduced Stress & Improved Welfare: Rabbits are easily stressed by environmental fluctuations. Extreme temperatures, high humidity, and poor air quality can lead to stress, which weakens their immune systems and makes them more susceptible to diseases. Maintaining a comfortable and stable microclimate minimizes stress, improving animal welfare and promoting overall health.

Feed Efficiency: Consistent temperature and comfortable conditions encourages rabbits to eat, digest feed efficiently, and ultimately gain weight. In contrast, heat stress significantly reduces feed intake, which results in poor weight gain and affects the overall profitability of rabbit farming.

Microclimate technologies of rabbit farms

Various systems are used in rabbit farms to maintain an optimal microclimate. Here are the main ones:

Pad Cooling system

To implement the indoor cooling system in a rabbit farm, we use Pad Cooling panels. How does it work? Dry and warm air passing through a humidified panel spends its heat on evaporation of moisture from the panel surface and, being saturated with water vapor, turns into cold and humid. With this system, the incoming air can be cooled by 8-12 °C, which ensures comfortable animal husbandry even at critical high temperatures.

A prerequisite for the correct operation of the cooling system is the passage of the entire volume of incoming air through the Cooling Pad and the presence of a humidity sensor, with which the system will shut down when the thresholds are exceeded. During the cold period, the openings for the cassettes should be insulated to avoid heat loss. Servo-operated valves are the best solution.

Heating system

A relatively stable body temperature of a rabbit is established only at the age of 30-45 days. In the future, his body temperature changes only in extreme conditions. Up to the age of 30 days, baby rabbits react to air temperatures of 21 °C and below as cold. When the air temperature is within 12 °C, the growth rate of baby rabbits decreases by 16.6%, safety by 6.3%, and feed consumption increases by 33%.

The heating system in the rabbit house can be implemented with different devices, depending on the available energy source:

  • Gas and diesel heaters guns of closed combustion
  • Fan heaters with hot water or steam.
