Advanced ULO & DCA Apple Storage Facility with Centralized Cooling Station

Solution

The project implemented Ultra-Low Oxygen (ULO) and Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere (DCA) technology—developed by Fruit Control—to ensure long-term preservation of apples with maximum freshness, firmness, and marketability.

Apples are stored in plastic containers across six controlled-atmosphere chambers, each measuring 14 × 7.5 m.
Every chamber is equipped with six CO₂ removal units, allowing precise regulation of gas composition to maintain optimal storage conditions.

Project Scope & Technical Implementation

Agrovent specialists executed a comprehensive set of engineering, installation, and commissioning tasks:

Structural & hermetic solutions

  • Installation of a PIR sandwich-panel thermal insulation circuit

  • Mounting of specialized hermetic doors ensuring airtight sealing for ULO/DCA operation

Cooling & humidity systems

  • Deployment of an advanced cooling system designed for low-oxygen storage

  • Installation of a humidification system to maintain ideal moisture levels and prevent dehydration of the fruit

Atmosphere-control infrastructure

  • Delivery, installation, and commissioning of CO₂ removal systems, ULO and DCA equipment

  • Integration of specialized fruit-storage control modules tailored to apple physiology

Lighting & utilities

  • Full installation of interior lighting for chambers, corridors, attic spaces, and engine rooms

Centralized cooling station

  • A single cooling station serves all chambers

  • Equipped with multiple piston compressors

  • Built on Bitzer (Germany) compressor technology for stable, energy-efficient performance

  • Controlled by a Danfoss automation system, pre-programmed with key storage parameters specific to apple varieties, respiration profiles, and long-term CA/ULO requirements

This configuration ensures precise atmosphere control, uniform cooling, and extended shelf life—crucial for hot and variable climates in India, Africa, the Middle East, and UAE.
