Tunnel ventilation system

In the tunnel ventilation system, all exhaust fans are located closer to the one end, and all air intakes – to the opposite. Air flows at a speed of 2–2.5 m/s along the entire length of the poultry house, taking off moisture, hot air and dust. The air flow produces a wind cooling effect, that helps to generate a so-called perceptible temperature at 5–12 °C below the actual.

Air exchange in the tunnel ventilation mode can reach 18 m³/kg of live weight. When calculating tunnel ventilation, an important criterion is the speed of air exchange in the room. The air should be changed once a minute. This allows to avoid heat accumulation in the room. The use of tunnel ventilation mode in a room with young chickens can provide a negative impact on their health. Even 0.5 m/s air velocity can cause severe overcooling of chickens, so it is necessary to maintain the basic ventilation mode until the age of 14 days.
Moreover it is undesirable to use this ventilation mode when the ambient temperature drops sharply – for instance, in the evening and night time. In this case, the poultry perceives the incoming air as a draft.
So, the tunnel ventilation mode has to be adjusted depending on the poultry age, the time of day and the season.
