The best option for the winter period and interseasonal period is to have proper ventilation in the cowshed. The main goal of winter ventilation is to remove excess humidity and harmful substances from the environment that can be detrimental to the health of the animals.
In addition to removing the used air, the ventilation system should also ensure a directed influx of fresh air. This can be achieved through the use of adjustable intake windows and shafts controlled by an automation system. Various technological variations can be selected specifically for your facility to facilitate mechanical air intake.
The installation of forced ventilation solves two problems: insufficient air exchange and high humidity.
There are three main ways to implement forced ventilation in cowsheds during the winter period:
1. Inflow through roof chimneys, extraction through wall fans:
This classical approach is suitable for small and low cowsheds, as well as those located in northern regions where the air temperature remains low for extended periods. To prevent the animals being exposed to constant cold drafts that may lead to respiratory diseases and other health issues, this method employs mixing shafts to heat the incoming air and evenly distribute it inside the cowshed. The used air is extracted by fans located on the sidewalls of the cowshed.
2. Inflow through wall flaps, extraction through roof chimneys:
Fresh cold air enters the cowshed through side windows and mixes with the internal air. The moist used air, which is warmer, tends to rise and is extracted through shafts located on the roof.
3. Inflow and extraction through roof chimneys:
This ventilation scheme ensures a quality exchange of air within the cowshed. The used air, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide are expelled, while fresh air is supplied to the cows in the necessary volume. This setup is suitable when it is not feasible to utilize the sidewalls, such as when they face the wind or if there is a sanitary zone nearby.
Advantages:
- Providing a comfortable temperature regime for the animals
- Control over fresh air supply and removal of used air
- Reduction of humidity to acceptable levels
- Independence from weather conditions and wind
- Installation possibilities in various buildings, including low-ceilinged or older structures of any size
- Option to set a minimum constant ventilation level at any outdoor temperature
Disadvantages:
- Equipment calculations should be carried out by specialists
- Electricity consumption costs
- Regular maintenance required for all systems and mechanisms
- Labor-intensive construction work when renovating old buildings
