Air Mixing System with Ceiling Fans

The main goal of ceiling fans is to mix air masses inside the building. They are installed on farms with at least 50 cows. The devices have a bulky design, allowing the blades to move large airflows and evenly distribute fresh air inside the structure.

Without ventilation, air masses become stagnant, creating stagnant zones and causing inconsistent composition and temperature of the air in different areas of the building, depending on the zones and ceiling height. Ceiling fans act as mixers, effectively blending air masses and equalizing their composition and temperature.

Ceiling fans have a limited range, which depends on the length of the blades. Therefore, an effective placement of ceiling fans in the cattle barn involves using multiple fans installed parallel to the feeding area or in a row above the central passage. This setup is particularly efficient during the shoulder seasons and winter, addressing the issues of increased humidity and gas accumulation. Resting areas and stalls remain dry, and the number of microbes in the environment decreases.

During the warm months, ceiling fans with large blades can lower the temperature in the barn by 2-8 °C. They operate quietly and do not create drafts. Additionally, the rotating blades can deter insects and birds.

Can ceiling ventilation replace exhaust ventilation? Ceiling fans cannot provide fresh air intake; their purpose is to mix the stale air, thus not affecting air exchange. Therefore, a ceiling ventilation system without the use of combination solutions will not be efficient.

Agrovent recommends placing ceiling fans along the central passage to mix the air in the most problematic area of the barn – the center, and installing exhaust fans near the animal housing area to facilitate heat dissipation and combat thermal stress. Such a combined solution makes the ventilation system truly effective throughout the year.

There are numerous benefits of ceiling fans. Firstly, they are economically advantageous as they consume very little electricity. Secondly, the silent operation of the fans does not cause discomfort to the animals and personnel. Thirdly, the speed of the fan blades can be adjusted, allowing for a gentle breeze or a powerful air wall.

Farms equipped with ceiling ventilation systems ensure that cows do not experience stress in any weather condition. They are protected from heat, cold, drafts, and lack of fresh air. As a result, they experience fewer health issues, leading to increased productivity.
